This recipe enables you to send personalised onboarding emails automatically to new signups. This uses Clearbit Enrichment data to lookup the job titles of your signups, and then segment them for enrollment in automated drip campaigns in Mailchimp.

Install Clearbit

Clearbit is a database of companies and employees which you can query through APIs and other services - including Hull.

To install Clearbit into Hull, go to “Ships” and select “Add Ship”. Under Clearbit, choose “Install Clearbit”.

Under Settings, under the credentials heading, you’ll be promoted to add your Clearbit API key. You’ll find this in your Clearbit account here.

In Hull, paste the Clearbit API key under the Credentials heading on the Clearbit Ship Settings page.

Configure Clearbit Enrichment

Clearbit Enrichment allows you to add meta data about each employee with just their email address (or company with just their domain) including their name, title, company, location, social profiles and more.

Once you’ve connected Clearbit, you can configure segments to be sent to Clearbit for enrichment. This will add data to every contact who ever enters that segment (e.g. Every new signup). If enrichment is enabled but no segments are listed, then every contact will be sent to Clearbit for enrichment.

The contacts returned will have properties for dozens of Clearbit contact and company properties.

Create a Segment by Job Title

You may have a set of many different sources of job title data including direct user input through forms, data from social login and third parties like Clearbit.

Under Users, start by adding an “attribute filter”  and search for “title”. You should see Clearbit > Employment title there. You may also see other similar sources of titles.

Under the “select operator” option, you’ll have the choice of what logic to include - e.g. “Contains”

You can then define the rules for each job title you want to segment by. e.g. “Employment Title” contacts “Marketing”.

If you’re looking to make your segments bigger, or have a broader, less-strict match.

  • Titles in bios
  • Employment Role

Once you’ve a segment that you’re happy with, choose “Actions” in the top right and “Save Segment”. Give your Segment a name, making it clear and easy to come back to.

Install Mailchimp

Hull allows you to manage your contacts, contact properties and segments in Mailchimp so you can trigger automated emails, send to more advanced segments and personalise the content of those emails.

To install Mailchimp, click “Add Ship” and select Mailchimp and click “Install”. You’ll be prompted to login with your Mailchimp credentials.

On the Mailchimp Ship page, choose settings. Here, you’ll see a field “Filtered Segments”. This has a dropdown and autocomplete field to add segments you want to sync with Mailchimp. When you’re done, click “Save” to start syncing your segments.

Create a Mailchimp Automation

Mailchimp can trigger drip email workflows automatically including a range of pre-built template workflows. This is a paid Mailchimp feature.

Mailchimp Automations are triggered based on segments and a schedule. You can control the segments sent from Hull to Mailchimp on the Mailchimp Ship page. Click “Settings” then under “Filtered Segments” add or update the segments which you want to use to trigger automated drip email campaigns in Mailchimp.

In Mailchimp, choose your automation (including the pre-built template workflows) and create your email series there.
